- I don’t remember how it came to this but somehow I watched the Variable Geo OVA before trying to play any of the games. While there are several earlier games, I bounced off the ones I tried and this is the only one that stuck. Fortunately, this one also has a story mode, which is what this completion represents and what this review is for
- Fair warning if you’re considering looking up this series: it is for adults and every Variable Geo property other than this game has some explicit scenes. Do not recommend this for kids. I guess the censors at Sony got to this one though, because this installment has none of that
- This is also Japan-only, and I played the JDM version without an English patch. It’s not really possible to understand much of the story when you do that, but it’s fully possible to play the game.
- Anyway that is a lot of background so far and 0 review. My review is this: It’s fine. The story mode has a lot of text and a lot of cutscenes, some of which are fully animated.
- If you were to play the story mode while actually watching all the cutscenes, it would take maybe 1-2 hours if you didn’t struggle with the fights at all. Without cutscenes, maybe 20-30 mins if you don’t struggle.
- As mentioned I can’t read moon rune, but the story mode seems like it’s not completely rote, because in some battles there are parts of your move set that are not available to you. That at least makes it so you can’t necessarily spam 1-2 moves the whole time; some fights do need strategy.
- Like all fighting games, if you’re only playing with yourself it’s hard to tell how deep it can be. I like the character designs a lot, and I like the deceptively simple move sets. My guess is there is more depth here than you’d imagine.
- By and large, very low commitment, do recommend
