Do you like the style, music, storylines, and characters of the FromSoftware universe but hate the actual games because they’re too hard? THIS IS FOR YOU.
In all seriousness though, it really is too easy, but it’s not because the gameplay is somehow bad. More than anything it seems rushed, like it needed better balancing, not better systems.
Not only that but it’s also way too short. If you’re in a hurry a first time player could knock this out in maybe 4 hours? If you then come back and 100% complete everything you’re maybe looking at 6-8?
All of that out of the way, this one is still a stone cold classic for me personally. I had this on the real GameCube back in 2003 or whenever it was and I cannot even imagine how many hours I put into it.
There is a multiplayer mode, which I never used then (and still haven’t ever used) and I would sink countless hours into the game, trying to get new cards, trying to build the perfect deck, for playing against a human opponent that I was entirely imagining. I didn’t have a human opponent; no one I knew owned the game. I just kept building decks thinking someday I might. I had mastered the single player mode, several times over
Anyway, the game mechanics are very simple: You build a deck of 30 cards, that deck is what you take into a level, and when you either clear the level or run out of cards, you’re tossed out of the level. You lose absolutely nothing when this happens. You can just go right back in.
Level design is okay. I can’t think of any which are extremely bad, and there are maybe 2-3 that are extremely good.
I would rate the story and lore a FromSoft out of 5. FromSoftware tends to reveal their storylines through reading books in libraries in the game world, or item descriptions or the like, and LK has SOME of that but it’s not only that. There are real cutscenes and a real explanation of what’s going on.
This is still a fun little low-stakes play through. Good for an evening and doesn’t really let you down in any way. You just wish the devs had been able to spend more time on it.
